Often it seems that we take on and start tasks and then at some point get to the point where the task feels too great, progress is slow, there is a feeling of being overwhelmed, frustrated and stressed. And in the end the desire to progress fades and you feel like quitting.
It seems that our drive and motivation is stuttering and obstacles to progress seem everywhere. Distractions are all too easily taken up and procrastination sets in. Ultimately this can lead to work on the task stopping altogether, with seemingly no clear way of it progressing to a conclusion!
So how can we ensure that we stay focused on the task at hand and motivated to see it through to its conclusion? Here are some simple steps that should help.


1. Make sure you know what the task is!
It seems obvious, but make sure that you are effective rather than just efficient (see previous post) and make sure that you are working on things that actually need to be done! Don’t waste your time working on or worrying about irrelevancies, focus on what needs to be done.


2. Break down your task into bite size chunks.
By doing so you create smaller, more manageable tasks that are then less daunting, will seem easier to complete. Furthermore by completing these smaller tasks you will then feel the sense of achievement gained (rather than the previous feeling of being overwhelmed!).

3. Establish momentum!
Just making a start is the best way (and it seems sometimes the most difficult) to getting to the end of the task – but you have to do it! Pick something ‘easy’ to start with, or something that you know that you will enjoy, perhaps something that you know can be done reasonably quickly. Completing that task will give you a sense of achievement and satisfaction..… so use that and move onto the next task, then the next, and the next. Continue like this and a head of steam will build that will be difficult to stop – it’s called momentum!

4. Avoid distractions.
You need to continue the momentum that has built up and must remain focussed, what you don’t need are distractions. Some will be difficult to avoid but you must help yourself to stay focused on the job at hand, leave emails, you can view them later, and avoid the phone (if at all possible!)
We hear so much about multitasking and clearly that can be a positive thing. But sometimes what you need is focus, you need to avoid distractions to get the job done and in this sense multitasking can be your enemy! Focus on completing the task – everything else can be done later, by doing so you will achieve more, will then become even more motivated and (see momentum above) this will snowball!

5. Take breaks.
Sometimes it is necessary to take a break, just to go for a walk and clear the mind – particularly if the task involves sitting in front of a screen for hours on end! Perhaps stop for a quick chat with someone or have lunch, get a drink or have a stretch – but get up and leave your desk, going online does NOT count as a break!
Aim to build regular breaks into your day, perhaps a 5 minute break from your desk every hour. By doing so you will come back just a little refreshed and raring to go, so by taking time out you will almost certainly increase the amount that you will achieve throughout the day.

A bullet point list for self development, improvement, motivation and well being
Earlier this year I received this via email titled "Handbook 2009" but of course its pretty much applicable for the whole of your life and not just any particular year. There’s some fantastic stuff in here, simple, succinct and to the point bullet point tips for life and self development.


Health:
1. Drink plenty of water.
2. Eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince and dinner like a beggar.
3. Eat more foods that grow on trees and plants and less that are produced in factories.
4. Live with the 3 E's -- Energy, Enthusiasm, and Empathy.
5. Make time to practice meditation, yoga, and prayer.
6. Play more games.
7. Read more books than you did last year.
8. Sit in silence for at least 10 minutes each day.
9. Sleep for 7 hours.
10. Take a 10-30 minutes walk every day, and..

11. While you walk, look around at your environment, take things in and smile.

Personality:
1. Don't compare your life to others'. You have no idea what their journey is all about.
2. Don't have negative thoughts or things you cannot control. Instead invest your energy in the positive present moment.
3. Don't over do it. Keep your limits.
4. Don't take yourself so seriously. No one else does.
5. Don't waste your precious energy on gossip.
6. Dream more while you are awake.
7. Envy is a waste of time and energy. You already have all you need.
8. Forget issues of the past. Don't remind your partner with his/her mistakes of the past. That will ruin your present happiness.
9. Life is too short to waste time hating anyone. Don't hate others.
10. Make peace with your past so it won't spoil the present.
11. No one is in charge of your happiness except you.
12. Realise that life is a school and you are here to learn. Problems are simply part of the curriculum that appear and fade away like maths classes, but the lessons you learn will last a lifetime.
13. Smile and laugh more.
14. You don't have to win every argument. Agree to disagree.

Society:
1. Call your family often.
2. Each day give something good to others.
3. Forgive everyone for everything.
4. Spend time with people over the age of 70 & under the age of 6.
5. Try to make at least three people smile each day.
6. What other people think of you is none of your business.
7. Your job won't take care of you when you are sick. Your friends will. Stay in touch.

Life:
1. Do the right thing!
2. Get rid of anything that isn't useful, beautiful or joyful.
3. Time heals.
4. However good or bad a situation is, it will change.
5. No matter how you feel, get up, dress up and show up.
6. The best is yet to come.
7. When you awake alive in the morning, thank GOD for it.
8. Your Inner most is always happy. So, be happy.

Procrastination is so wasteful, it adds to individuals stress and worries and grinds away inside, gradually wearing you down...
Procrastination seems to be so very common and almost a natural thing that many people do on a regular basis without even trying! To be good at it there’s nothing you have to learn and of course nothing to do (quite literally!). But it does take discipline to overcome it.
Here are 3 very usable, simple and easy to remember tips that if you apply should help you to overcome procrastination and get things done!


1) Clarity
You need to be clear on what needs to be done, how and when and perhaps how long it will take you to do it. Think things through properly, most things probably seem much worse than they actually are and when you actually get on with them can get them done quite quickly.
So don’t add things that you don’t fully understand to your to do list….. if you don’t fully understand and are not clear on what needs to be done, when and how then you’ll always put it off.


2) Give 15 minutes
Every task you’re working on needs to get at least 15 minutes of your full attention. If you’re not sure how long it will take in addition to these 15 minutes - that’s fine. But first, spend 15 minutes honestly trying your best working on the task.
This rule is particularly useful for tasks you’re not interested in or not keen on doing. They’re usually the ones which you know you have to do, but you don’t really want to. So spend 15 minutes working on such a task, and get rid of all the interruptions and distractions under your control. 15 minutes of really focused effort will get you under way and the chances are that you’ll then be motivated enough to continue…


3) Do one more thing
Whenever you start thinking to yourself that you’ve had enough with the task and it’s time to drop it and move on to something else, then do one more thing towards it’s completion - and then move on.
Quite often we feel fed up with tasks to the point that we struggle to get things done. We just want to leave them and walk away. Of course we’ll have to get back to them to finish, but it’s easier just to walk away.
The problem is in your mind this then just goes round and round adding to the pressure and stress and leaving you wasting time stressing over it. Consequently the more things you leave unfinished, the slower you’ll be able to get things done. So concentrate on finishing things, this frees up your thinking power for working on your new things.

Too busy, too rushed or simply too stressed to even think about how you could go about adding a positive spin to your life? Of course it all takes so much time: read a book, make a list, talk to this person, etc. If you do have the time, do you have the energy and determination?
It's tough. Sometimes, too tough.As I tried to clear my head during a walk recently, something occurred to me. Things often change due to short bursts of action that last 30 seconds or less. Think about it, think of how potent and life changing a mere thirty seconds could be.


Experience Your Life Differently
The more I thought about it, I began to really notice and feel how long thirty seconds was. Try it. Do nothing but focus only on your breath (nothing else) for a whole thirty seconds (a greta stress easer this one). You'll soon realize that thirty seconds is indeed a reasonable and worthy amount of time that can be used purposefully. Begin to explore all the things you can do with such a seemingly small moment of time. Use it wisely to make small contributions towards new habits and towards stopping wasteful ones. Imagine, gradually, thirty seconds, by thirty seconds, you will be able to experience your life differently without even really trying.

Grow Your 30 Second Muscle
All, you need to do is hold your focus on a something positive for a whole thirty seconds (without getting distracted), and follow through with thirty seconds of positive action. Voila! In under a minute you've made a positive and valuable change to the flow of your life.
I'm sure you can find thirty seconds somewhere in your day, or better still, (and think here about the value to you - find that time!) once every hour to make small, yet frequent positive changes to your life.

Here are some ideas.; you may consider some useful, some not. The point is that major change doesn't always have to take major effort or major amounts of time.


Start a 30 second savings habit
All it takes is 30 seconds to grab some cash and to put a coin, some change or a note into a daily savings jar. I have a little pink pig which I feed happily each day in under 30 seconds.

Reduce your electricity bill
30 seconds is all it takes to walk over to the wall, bend down and turn all your electrical appliances off at the wall that are not being used. After one month, my kids are now experts at this new money saving habit.

Lose the frown
All it takes is less than 30 seconds to turn a frown into a smile. A smile literally relaxes hundreds of muscles and releases pockets of stress and tension held in your face. Feel your face now for any unnecessary squinting, frowning, or tight muscles. And think about how much this can help others, smiles are infectious!

Start a 30 second clutter clearing session
Walk to a cluttered draw/cupboard or your desk and spend a huge thirty seconds grabbing one thing that you no longer need and throw it out. No fuss and no stress. Allow thirty seconds each day to clear at least one thing from your chosen place. The beauty of 30 seconds is that you haven't got any time to have a discussion or argument with yourself. If in doubt, throw it out.

Take a chill pill
How often do you hold your breath and suck in the stress. Spend longer on your exhale to support your body in releasing built up stress and tension. Ten seconds on the inhale and twenty seconds on the exhale is a good formula for inviting space into your body and creating distance between you and your worries.

Get unstuck
Always keep a copy of your favorite inspirational book or a list of your favourite inspiration quotes or readings close by. Open it randomly and read a few paragraphs to bring insight, to your current situation. I often pick up a book when my mind is going around in circles to regroup/refocus an unproductive mind. Perhaps use some of the pages from this blog?

Repeat a mantra
When confusion hits, step back, take a breather, and spend a valuable thirty seconds calming those erratic thoughts with a sanity saving mantra. One favorite is "I trust" and it allows people to "let go" and relax into the situation.

The 30 second detox
Did you know that 70% of waste is eliminated via your lungs? Improve the efficiency of your lungs by breathing deeply into your lower abdomen. Place your hands on your belly and feel it rise and fall with each breath cycle. A thirty second detox every hour will do wonders for your health (and of course your stress levels).

Stay hydrated
Your brain needs water to think clearly. It's the first place in the body to lose water. Get into the habit of sipping on water for thirty seconds every hour.

Do nothing for 30 seconds
Put some space between you and your hectic schedule. Treat yourself to regular 30 second breaks and give your body an opportunity to re-balance itself. Close your eyes, cup the palm of your hands over your ears and listen to the blissful sounds of the ocean playing inside your head.

Get rid of negative thoughts
Each time you catch yourself complaining or thinking negatively, spend thirty seconds focusing on the opposite and increase your ratio between helpful and unhelpful thoughts.

Take a 30 second exercise break
Stand up, roll your shoulders, stretch or try some wall push ups. Better still keep two cans of food beside your computer. When reading an article, grab a can in each hand and lift up to your shoulders and back down again, repeat as if lifting weights.

Adjust the speed of your day
Take some time out and notice if your mind is racing, your breathing shallow or your body feels rushed and uptight. Simply by taking thirty seconds to observe your body, you can slow down your thoughts, your breath and the speed of your day.
You might even realize that your body is hungry, thirsty or simply needs some fresh air.

Turn off the TV
Value your time. All it takes is 30 seconds to get up off your seat and turn the TV off. Then do something meaningful instead like talk to your family, read a book or connect to nature by taking a walk.

Eat mindfully
Take thirty seconds before you eat your meal to make sure you are settled, present and ready to smell, taste, eat and enjoy your food consciously. Breathe in "I am calm" Breathe out "I smile" Repeat five times.

Take a break at work
Perhaps every couple of hours why not put aside a whole 30 seconds or so to do nothing, to breathe, to relax and perhaps to stretch - before going back to work perhaps a little rejuvinated.


Try it today
Take 30 seconds to breathe, smile, stretch and cancel some negative thoughts and see how much better things are - all for the sake of 30 seconds! Amazing!

Lets recharge those batteries! We all seem to be busy, always rushing and stressed, never any time to simply 'do nothing', it's as though we have been conditioned to be 'doing something', to be 'busy' at all times with never any time to calm down and truly relax.

A monk would no doubt explain that experiencing inner peace is synonymous with being happy about each moment and enjoying everything life throws at you. But we're not monks who spend their days meditating for their eternal ohm. Most of us lead busy lives: we play hard and work harder!
However sometimes we need to calm down, to relax, to recharge our batteries and take stock of our directions. If we don't do this then we can even run the risk of becoming ill, having a nervous breakdown or simply becoming a grump that no one can stand being around.
Today's society is geared so much toward production, productivity and performance that we have forgotten how to smell the flowers occasionally. We hardly have time to breathe and before we realize it, another day has rushed by.

We need to force ourselves to relax, to break away from our normal world...... Listed here are some (mostly) simple ideas for relaxing, try them. See if you can force yourself to find just 5 minutes to try some. Immerse yourself in it and you will probably see that the five minutes seems longer than just 5 minutes and you will feel calmer, refreshed and ready for whatever come next......

  • Listen to classical music
  • Watch a river run over pebbles
  • Play with a pet
  • Cuddle a baby
  • Smile at a child
  • Get lost in the great outdoors
  • Collect shells at the beach
  • Play games

We live in a very busy, cluttered and unbalanced world and many of us can't even identify the areas of our life that need attention let alone balance them! It's very easy to get into this state. We typically go through similar routines every day: wake up, eat, work, eat, sleep...do over. If you don't find the time to at least think about the many varying aspects of your life, it's incredibly easy to simply lose balance.

Here are 13 quick points for you, they are purposely short and lack detail, think about them (there's plenty more info avalable if you want it). When was the last time you made a conscious effort to improve in any of these areas? Use these to help get balance in your life.


Your Spending
Are you spending too much, most people seem to! Take a good look at your monthly incomings and outgoings and make savings where you can. But, don’t be so cheap that you're cutting out birthday gifts or being rude at occasions. Remember, you can't take your money with you!
Your Time

This isn't always easy and even the best of us work too much and don’t take enough time out. Unfortunately your time is a limited resource so seek balance!
Your Diet

No breakfast and a big dinner, that’s the way a lot of us seem to eat (me included) and yet the opposite is usually a lot better for you! A big Breakfast and small dinner tends to be a better balance for most of us, or little and often throughout the day.
Your Cheque book

Little deliberate actions really make a difference when it comes to mastering your personal finances. Look after the pennies and the ounds will look after themselves.
Your Children

Trying to make sure that your children are balanced people is surely one of the most impoprtant things you can do in your life. Make sure that they give and take, that they study and enjoy, that they read as well as watching TV (there's lots of good informative stuff on TV, just filter out some of the dross!).
Your Meals

Too many carbs and not enough healthy fats (yes some are healthy and some fat is neede by the body), or too much fat and not enough carbs. There is really nothing wrong with a little junk food once in a while, but there is definitely something wrong with junk food all the time.
Your Net Worth

This is your balance sheet: Your assets – Your Liabilities = Your Net Worth. This is an accounting formula which always balances out, but it should be calculated from time to time. Ideally, you'd see an increase in your net worth each year.
Your Relationships

Do your friends drain you? Do you drain them? Good friendships are balanced, thought provoking, informative, enjoyable, with give and take and a little challenging.
The Tyres on your Car!

Why this one? Well it can save you thousands of pounds in fuel over the course of your life and at the same time make you a lot safer too - remember when you have to brake hard in the wet, the quality, performance and state of your tyres WILL make a difference!
Your Goals

Don't make them too hard or impossible, but ensure that they are challenging enough to excite and to stretch you.
Education and Action

Too much action without education and knowledge can lead to major mistakes and pitfalls. Not enough action on things we learn can wastes our education and knowledge. You either use it, or lose it, when it comes to education and knowledge.
Positives and Negatives

Too much positive feedback can kill us, we need some negative feedback too (in a constructive way of course, constructive criticism helps us improve). If you are not getting any negative feedback, ask more people to critique your work.
Your Portfolio

A balance between stocks and bonds (risk and safety), and then rebalancing as you age is essential to meeting your life long financial goals.

Here is a list of some of the things that should help you to be successful, strange than not many are taught are school! It's hardly a comprehensive list (if only life were that simple!), but at least it should help......

1. How to predict consequences.

How many times have you heard it said, "I never thought..." The fact is, most people are very bad at predicting consequences.The prediction of consequences is part science, part mathematics, and part visualization. It is essentially the ability to create a mental image of the events that would follow, "what is likely to happen if...?"But of course the danger in such situations is focusing on what you want to happen rather than what might happen. When preparing to jump across a gap, for example, you may visualize yourself landing on the other side. This is good; it's positive thought, it leads to successful jumping. But you need also to visualize not landing on the other side.What would happen then? Have you even contemplated the likely outcome of a 40 meter drop?You need to compare the current situation with your past experience and calculate the probabilities of different outcomes. If, for example, you are looking at a five meter gap, you should be asking, "How many times have I successfully jumped five meters? How many times have I failed?" If you don't know, you should know enough to attempt a test jump over level ground where the consequences of failure are not as bad. People don't think ahead enough. Watch situations and interactions unfold in the environment around you and try to predict the outcome. Write down your predictions and with practice, you will become better at predicting consequences.Even more interestingly, over time, you will begin to observe patterns and generalities, things that make consequences even easier to predict. Things fall, for example. Glass breaks. People get mad when you insult them. Hot things will be dropped. Dogs sometimes bite. The bus (or train) is sometimes late. These sorts of generalisations - often known as 'common sense' - will help you avoid unexpected, and sometimes damaging, consequences.

2. How to read.

Oddly, by this I do not mean "literacy" in the traditional sense, but rather, how to look at some text and to understand, in a deeper way, what is being said (this also applies to audio and video, but 'reading' first!).The four major types of writing are: description, argument, explanation and definition. You should learn to recognize these different types of writing by learning to watch for indicators or keywords.Then, you should learn how sentences are joined together to form these types of writing. For example, an argument will have two major parts, a premise and a conclusion. The conclusion is the point the author is trying to make, and it should be identified with an indicator (such as the words "therefore", "so", or "consequently", for example).A lot of writing is fill, packing, or waffle - wasted words intended to make the author look good, to distract your attention, or to simply fill more space. Being able to cut through the crap and get straight to what is actually being said, without being distracted, is an important skill.Find a basic book on informal logic (it will have a title like "critical thinking" or something like that). Look in the book for argument forms and indicator words and practice spotting these words in text and in what you hear. Every day, focus on a specific indicator word and watch how it is used in practice.

3. How to distinguish truth from fiction.

In any given day loads of "knowledge" is thrown at us from many directions, it's no good accepting it all uncritically as the truth, we need to question it!So the first thing to learn is to actually question what you are told, what you read, what you see on television or hear on the radio. Do not simply accept what you are told. Always ask, how can you know that this is true? What evidence would lead you to believe that it is false?Every day, subject at least one piece of information (a newspaper column, a radio item or an interview) to thorough scrutiny. Listen to what is being said, analyze each sentence, analyze every word, and ask yourself what you are expected to believe and how you are expected to feel. Then ask whether you have sufficient reason to believe and feel this way, or whether you are being manipulated. How many times have you heard a radio news headline, but then when you hear the full article/interview you realise that the headline was wrong! Was it someone trying to manipulate, or did they just get it wrong?

4. How to empathise.

Most people live in their own world, and for the most part, that's OK. But it is important to at least recognize that there are other people, and that they live in their own world as well. Remember, not everyone is like you, we are all different, we have different past experiences and views. Don't assume that everyone thinks like you or views things the same way as you.Part of this process of understanding other peoples views involves attempting to see things through someone else's eyes. A person may be, quite literally, in a different place. They might not see what you see, and may have seen things you didn't see. Being able to understand how this change in perspective may change what they believe is important.But even more significantly, you need to be able to imagine how other people feel. You have to put yourself in their shoes and try to imagine how they will see things.When you are empathetic you will begin to seek out and understand ways that help bridge the gap between you and other people. Being polite and considerate, for example, will become more important to you. You will be able to feel someone's hurt if you are rude to them. In the same way, it will become more important to be honest, because you will begin to see how transparent your lies are, and how offensive it feels to be thought of as someone who is that easily fooled.Empathy isn't some sort of bargain. It isn't the application of the Golden Rule. It is a genuine feeling in yourself that operates in synch with the other person, a way of accessing their inner mental states through the sympathetic operation of your own mental states. You are polite because you feel bad when you are rude; you are honest because you feel offended when you lie.You need to learn how to have this feeling, but once you have it, you will understand how empty your life was before you had it.

5. How to be creative.

Everybody can be creative, and if you look at your own life you will discover that you are already creative in numerous ways. Humans have a natural capacity to be creative - that's how our minds work - and with practice can become very good at it.The trick is to understand how creativity works. Sometimes people think that creative ideas spring out of nothing but creativity is in fact the result of using and manipulating your knowledge in certain ways.Genuine creativity is almost always a response to something. Maybe something that was recognised as not being good. Creativity also arises in response to a specific problem: how to rescue a cat, how to cross a gap, how to hang laundry.So, in order to be creative, the first thing to do is to learn to look for problems to solve, things that merit a response, things that need improving, needs that need to be filled etc. This takes practice.In addition, creativity involves a transfer of knowledge from one area to another, and sometimes a manipulation of that knowledge. When you see a gap in real life, how did you cross a similar gap in an online game? Or, if you need to clean up battery acid, how did you get rid of excess acid in your stomach?Creativity, in other words, often operates by metaphor, which means you need to learn how to find things in common between the current situation and other things you know. This is what is typically meant by "thinking outside the box" - you want to go to outside the area of the current problem. And the particular skill involved is pattern recognition. This skill is hard to learn, and requires a lot of practice, which is why creativity is hard.But pattern recognition can be learned - it's what you are doing when you say one song is similar to another, or when you are taking photographs of, say, flowers or fishing boats. The arts very often involve finding patterns in things, which is why, this year, you should devote some time every day to an art - music, photography, video, drawing, painting or poetry.

6. How to communicate clearly.

Most of all this is simply a matter of knowing what you want to say, and then employing some simple tools in order to say it. Probably the hardest part of this is knowing what you want to say. But it is better to spend time being sure you understand what you mean than to write a bunch of stuff trying to make it more or less clear.Knowing what to say is often a matter of structure. Professional writers employ a small set of fairly standard structures. For example, some writers prefer articles (or even whole books!) consisting of a list of points, like this blog. Another structure, often called 'pyramid style', is employed by journalists - the entire story is told in the first paragraph, and each paragraph thereafter offers less and less important details.Inside this overall structure, writers provide arguments, explanations, descriptions or definitions, sometimes in combination. Each of these has a distinctive structure. An argument, for example, will have a conclusion, a point the writer wants you to believe. The conclusion will be supported by a set of premises. Linking the premises and the conclusion will be a set of indicators. The word "therefore", for example, points to the conclusion.Learning to write clearly is a matter of learning about the tools, and then practice in their application. Probably the best way to learn how to structure your writing is to learn how to give speeches without notes. This will force you to employ a clear structure (one you can remember!) and to keep it straightforward.Additionally, master the tools the professionals use. Learn the structure of arguments, explanations, descriptions and definitions. Learn the indicator words used to help readers navigate those structures. Master basic grammar, so your sentences are unambiguous. Information on all of these can be found online.Then practice your writing every day. A good way to practice is to join a student or volunteer newspaper - writing with a team, for an audience, against a deadline. It will force you to work more quickly, which is useful, because it is faster to write clearly than to write poorly. If no newspaper exists, create one, or start up a news blog.

7. How to learn.

Your brain consists of billions of neural cells that are connected to each other. To learn is essentially to form sets of those connections. Your brain is always learning, whether you are studying mathematics or staring at the sky, because these connections are always forming. The difference in what you learn lies in how you learn.When you learn, you are trying to create patterns of connectivity in your brain. You are trying to connect neurons together, and to strengthen that connection. This is accomplished by repeating sets of behaviours or experiences. Learning is a matter of practice and repetition.Thus, when learning anything - from '2+2=4' to the principles of quantum mechanics - you need to repeat it over and over, in order to grow this neural connection. Sometimes people learn by repeating the words aloud - this form of rote learning was popular not so long ago. Taking notes when someone talks is also good, because you hear it once, and then repeat it when you write it down.Think about learning how to throw a ball. Someone can explain everything about it, and you can understand all of that, but you still have to throw the ball several thousand times before you get good at it. You have to grow your neural connections in just the same way you grow your muscles.Some people think of learning as remembering sets of facts. It can be that, sometimes, but learning is more like recognition than remembering. Because you are trying to build networks of neural cells, it is better to learn a connected whole rather than unconnected parts, where the connected whole you are learning in one area has the same pattern as a connected whole you already know in another area. Learning in one area, then, becomes a matter of recognizing that pattern.Sometimes the patterns we use are very artificial, as in 'every good boy deserves fudge' (the sentence helps us remember musical notes). In other cases, and more usefully, the pattern is related to the laws of nature, logical or mathematical principles, the flow of history, how something works as a whole, or something like that. Drawing pictures often helps people find patterns (which is why mind-maps are popular and so useful).Learning to learn is the same as learning anything else. It takes practice. You should try to learn something every day - a random word in the dictionary, or a random Wikipedia entry (why not set Wikipedia as you home page as I do). When learning this item, do not simply learn it in isolation, but look for patterns - does it fit into a pattern you already know? Is it a type of thing you have seen before? Embed this word or concept into your existing knowledge by using it in some way - write a blog post containing it, or draw a picture explaining it.Think, always, about how you are learning and what you are learning at any given moment. Remember, you are always learning - which means you need to ask, what are you learning when you are watching television, going shopping, driving the car, playing football? What sorts of patterns are being created? What sorts of patterns are being reinforced? How can you take control of this process?

8. How to stay healthy.

Quite simply and practically put, the maintenance of your health involves two major components: minimizing exposure to disease or toxins, and maintenance of the physical body.Minimizing exposure to disease and toxins is mostly a matter of cleanliness and order. Simple things such as cleaning cooking surfaces and cooking food completely reduces the risk of bacterial contamination. Washing your hands regularly prevents transmission of human borne viruses and diseases.In a similar manner, some of the hot issues of today are essentially issues about how to warn against exposure to diseases and toxins. Activities such as drinking, eating fatty foods, smoking, and taking drugs are essentially the introduction of toxins into your system, so do it in moderation, and where the toxins are significant, don't do it at all.Personal maintenance is probably even more important, as the major threats to health are generally those related to physical deterioration. The subjects of proper nutrition and proper exercise should be learned and practiced. Even if you do not become a health freak it is nonetheless useful to know what foods and types of actions are beneficial, and to create a habit of eating good foods and practicing beneficial actions.Every day, seek to be active in some way - cycle, walk a mile, play a sport, or exercise. In addition, every day, seek to eat at least one meal that is "good for you", that consists of protein and minerals (like meat and vegetables, or soy and fruit).

9. How to value yourself.

It is perhaps cynical to say that society is a giant conspiracy to get you to feel badly about yourself, but it wouldn't be completely inaccurate either. Advertisers make you feel badly so you'll buy their product, politicians make you feel incapable so you'll depend on their policies and programs, even your friends and acquaintances may seek to make you doubt yourself in order to seek an edge in a competition.You can have all the knowledge and skills in the world, but they are meaningless if you do not feel personally empowered to use them; it's like owning a Ferrari and not having a driver's license. It looks shiny in the driveway, but your not really getting any value out of it unless you take it out for a spin.Valuing yourself is partially a matter of personal development, and partially a matter of choice. In order to value yourself, you need to feel you are worth valuing. In fact, you are worth valuing, but it often helps to prove it to yourself by attaining some objective, learning some skill, or earning some distinction. And in order to value yourself, you have to say "I am valuable."This is an important point.How we think about ourselves is as much a matter of learning as anything else. If somebody tells you that you are worthless over and over, and if you do nothing to counteract that, then you will come to believe you are worthless, because that's how your neural connections will form. But if you repeat, and believe, and behave in such a way as to say to yourself over and over, I am valuable, then that's what you will come to believe.What is it to value yourself? It's actually many things. For example, it's the belief that you are good enough to have an opinion, have a voice, and have a say, that your contributions do matter. It's the belief that you are capable, that you can learn to do new things and to be creative. It is your ability to be independent, and to not rely on some particular person or institution for personal well-being, and autonomous, capable of making your own decisions and living your live in your own way.All of these things are yours by right. But they will never be given to you. You have to take them, by actually believing in yourself (no matter what anyone says) and by actually being autonomous. You have to take charge of your own sense of self-worth.Do it every day. Tell yourself that you are smart, you are cool, you are strong, you are good, and whatever else you want to be. Say it out loud, in the morning - hidden in the noise of the shower, if need be, but say it. Then, practice these attributes. Be smart by (for example) solving a crossword puzzle. Be cool by making your own fashion statement. Be strong by doing something you said to yourself you were going to do. Be good by doing a good deed. And every time you do it, remind yourself that you have, in fact, done it.

10. How to live meaningfully.

This is probably the hardest thing of all to learn, and the least taught.Living meaningfully is actually a combination of several things. It is, in one sense, your dedication to some purpose or goal. But it is also your sense of appreciation and dedication to the here and now. And finally, it is the realization that your place in the world, your meaningfulness, is something you must create for yourself.Too many people live for no reason at all. They seek to make more and more money, or they seek to make themselves famous, or to become powerful, and whether or not they attain these objectives, they find their lives empty and meaningless. This is because they have confused means and ends - money, fame and power are things people seek in order to do what is worth doing.What is worth doing?That is up to you to decide. Perhaps it is helping people obtain an education or to seek to cure diseases, to explore space, to worship God, to raise a family, to design cars, or to attain enlightenment.If you don't decide what is worth doing, someone will decide for you, and at some point in your life you will realize that you haven't done what is worth doing at all. So spend some time, today, thinking about what is worth doing. You can change your mind tomorrow. But begin, at least, to guide yourself somewhere.The second thing is sometimes thought of as 'living in the moment'. It is essentially an understanding that you control your thoughts. Your thoughts have no power over you; the only thing that matters at all is this present moment. If you think about something - some hope, some failure, some fear - that thought cannot hurt you, and you choose how much or how little to trust that thought.Another aspect of this is the following: what you are doing right now is the thing that you most want to do. Now you may be thinking, "No way! I'd rather be on Malibu Beach!" But if you really wanted to be on Malibu Beach, you'd be there. The reason you are not is because you have chosen other priorities in your life - to your family, to your job, to your country.When you realize you have the power to choose what you are doing, you realize you have the power to choose the consequences. Which means that consequences - even bad consequences - are for the most part a matter of choice.

Life is what we make of it. There is no doubt that life has its ups and downs. But, how we deal with them can sometimes make all the difference. Here are eight truths that I would like to share with you, they come from various sources, they're readily available and most will be pretty familiar to you. There's a message in each that I think we can all learn from, and when applied, will undoubtedly improve our lives. Some of these lessons may be old-hat for you. If so, look for ways to refine the idea to ensure your getting the most out of it. On the other hand, you may completely disagree with an idea or two!


1. Friends Come and Go. At school, and indeed for the next ten years or so I always imagined spending most of my life with the same people. But things change and we all move on one way or another.Friends will always come and go in your life; many of my friends are spread around the country and not exactly in meeting distance. It can be a hard thing to accept, but many of the friends you spend time with now, might not be around in the next few years.
Important Lesson: There are an abundance of amazing people out there for you to meet and build relationships with. If you don't have many friends, don't stress, there are literally billions of friendship possibilities.

2. You Won't Always Get What You Want. You won't always get what you want in life: people are going to be late, people will let you down, items you want won't always be available.
Important Lesson: Don't look for happiness in material possessions and if things don't go your way, learn to accept them. Life's too short to stay miserable.

3. Many People Will Love You, but Many Will Not. Whether you are a celebrity, a charity worker or just a normal guy, there are going to be people that love you and what you do, but there's also going to be plenty people that don't like you. There are many possible reasons such as jealousy, similarities to them, or just not being someone's 'type'.
Important Lesson: Not everyone is always going to like you, and that's fine. If people want to spend time talking about you then that is their problem. You are perfect as you are. You shouldn't need everyone to like you to have some form of self-esteem.

4. Nobody Can Transform Your Life Like You Can. Wouldn't it be lovely if we didn't have to go up on stage, but we could just read a paragraph of a blog post and become a perfect public speaker? Or, wouldn't it be nice if our friends could do daring things, and we would benefit from them as well?The support and help of others can only take you so far, you're going to have to do your own thing to make big changes in your life situation.
Important Lesson: Do things for yourself and learn to stand on your own two feet. People you rely on won't be around forever, and you don't want to have to use others as a crutch to get anywhere in life.

5. You Are Going to Fail. Whether it is exams, projects, companies, or even the odd pub quiz, there are times when you will fail to meet your goals.As the saying goes - "Only those who are asleep make no mistakes".
Important Lesson: You can learn a lot from others, but it is your own failures that are going to teach you the most valuable lessons in life. Learn from your failures, embrace them, and use them to drive you on to success.

6. Rain Will Sometimes Cancel Play. On some occasions when you have your shorts on and you're ready for the beach, it's going to rain. Or, when you get to that first hole and you're ready to tee off - the clouds will open. Things aren't always going to go how you would like them to.
Important Lesson: Don't stress about the things that you can't control. Learn to live with things that happen. You can't change the past, but you can change how you react to things.

7. There May Be No Tomorrow. At least, not for you anyway. We never know what is around the corner, a car crash, a heart attack; heck...even the end of the world is possible. Let's face it, although we would all like to live till we are 70 years old, that's certainly not always the case. There will be one day that is our last.
Important Lesson: Make the most of each day. Make sure the people you care about actually know it, don't worry about little matters, just make sure you spend time doing the things you love.

8. Someone Else Will Always Have More. Whether it is money, partners, friends or even blog subscribers, there will always be areas where other people have more than you. That isn't to say you can't become abundant in whatever you want.The wanting of more actually holds a very important lesson...
Important Lesson: Just because someone has 'more', that doesn't mean they are happy. Read the biography of any celebrity and they will tell you they enjoy their process of earning money, rather than what money can do to make them happy. In other words, focus on what you love, not what the thing you love can get you.
